A very bleak future is ahead of us should such weak economic growth in the world’s poorest countries continue – a future in which extreme poverty is the reality for hundreds of millions for many years to come. The decline of global poverty is one of the most important achievements in history, but the end of poverty is still very far away. The definition of poverty differs from country to country, but in high-income countries, the poverty line is around $30 per day. The World Bank classifies anyone living on less than $2.15 a day as living in extreme poverty. That all of the world will live on more than $30 a day might be hard to imagine right now, but if the whole world and each government joined hand in hand to end poverty today we would achieve that goal tomorrow.
